It will not be long before the snow has melted and flowers are in bloom. The sweet smell of flowers and the lush green lawns will grace our scenery. All of this will be followed by the sounds of sneezes and sniffling heard by thousands of seasonal allergy sufferers.

Pollen, grass and rag weed are among the most common spring allergens. The one that effects most however is hay fever. Many people can suffer from other allergens as well, such as pets, dust and food allergies.

Allergies can hit at any age. You may go 30 years or more without suffering from any allergies and then suddenly they suffer. Allergies can be very unpreditable. They may also disappear or change over time. They can hit anybody of any background.

There are many medications for allergy suffers. New prescriptions and treatments are coming out all the time. If you are a allergy sufferer you should seek the help of your family physician for advice on prescriptions and treatment options.

Most of the prescriptions and treatments are normally covered by most traditional health insurance plans. Of course you would want to verify with your insurance company. There are also over the counter medications geared towards allergy symptoms.

You can not totally eliminate allergens, but you can help to minimize them by taking a few steps. Do not open windows, use the ac. The pollen count is highest in the am and pm so enjoy the outdoors mid day. Hire help to work in the yard if it stirs up allergies for you.

Many do not realize that the springtime cold is actually an allergy. So when the flowers start to bloom stock up on the vitamin C and Zinc to keep you healthy. And use sanitary precautions to ward of the cold virus.

So when all the frost is gone and the flowers start to show their pretty colors get ready for the spring allergens to arrive. If you find yourself sneezing and sniffling head to the local drug store or to your doctor and find relief from spring allergies.

Medical expenses in Texas physician offices and hospitals are skyrocketing. This is why it is important for Texans to have medical insurance to protect thm from these cost. Many Texans go uninsured for many different reasons, this is not a good thing.

There is no situation that would warrant a single person to go uninsured. There is no good excuse! Can’t afford? There are too many options! I have a pre existing condition and I can not find coverage. Texas has insurance options for high risk consumers.

For the treatment of a minor illness it could reach the cost of $1000 or more. If you have a major illness it could cost multiple thousands to treat and diagnose. Your finances could suffer if you did not have health insurance. Not only will health insurance protect your finances it will also insure good medical care.

Learning the basics of health insurance is key in finding the plan that well meet your needs and your budget. If you surf the insternet you can find plenty of information to help you understand the basics. One of the best sites for information is the Texas Department of Insurance.

The purpose of health isnurance is to offset the cost of medical expenses to the policy holder. Each plan is different in what it covers. Many people have health insurance througha group plan that employer offered health insurance. But a popular choice now is individual health insurance.

Freedom of choice is the best thing about individual health insurance. You can find a plan that best meets your needs, expectations and budget. People love the flexiblity. If they change jobs they can keep the plan, no more losing your health insurance just because you change jobs.

During your search you will want to pay close attention to all the details of the plan and the carrier. All carriers work a little different. Their billing and enrollment process can differ. You will want to know all these details before deciding on a policy.

Enlisting the help of an agent to help you find a plan is a smart move. And agent can find you a variety of plans, carriers and their rates in just one phone call. An agent can also help you through the details and help you understand the difficult stuff.

If you are told you have a chronic condition it does not mean that you will always be ill. It means that you have a condition that will need to be managed to keep under control. You will need to take measures to manage the condition for the rest of your life.

If a chronic illness is not managed well it can really affect everyday living. You may have to miss work or you may not be able to work. It may affect your physical abilities. At times it can cause extreme pain and fatigue. And the stress from everything can cause anxiety.

The news that you have a chronic illness is crushing at first. It is a devastating blow. It can be very scary as well. You focus on the “no cure” aspect of the situation and you become depressed and overwhelmed. But, many people can enjoy life to the fullest if they manage the illness.

It is normal to have some crazy emotions at first. Once you have ran through the emotional storm pick yourself up and get busy managing. You are not alone, many people live with it. It is not the end of your life it is just a new chapter.

Doctors give great information, but the focus on diagnosis and treatment. you should search for more information about managing and living with your illness. You can find a vast amount of information from the internet or a support group.

Your health insurance is an important component to managing the chronic illness. You will need to make ongoing office visits. Some carriers have help lines and incentives to managing your chronic illness more efficiently. Managing the illness saves them money, so they tend to offer assistance. Get to know your health plan and the resources your carrier makes available to you.

You will also want to become familiar with self management. You must be proactive. Keep up with appointments and treatment plans. Remember it is a serious issue, that deserves your attention. You may want to look into some lifestyle changes to help improve your health as well.

You should always have your preventative exam each year that your health insurance typically pays for even if you do not currently have a chronic condition. Preventative care is a good way of detecting the early signs of these chronic illnesses.

There are Pros and Cons to buying individual health insurance versus accepting your employer group plan. In order for you to make an informative decision we will touch on some of the main pros and cons in this article. By reviewing these pros and cons you should be able to make a decision with confidence that you have thought through thoroughly.

On a group policy it is often difficult to afford coverage for dependents, because the employer does not pay a portion. Even your rates can be expensive if you employer does not share much of the cost for you or the plan they offer is very expensive. With the rising cost of health insurance these are trends we are seeing.

Individual health insurance premiums are typically more affordable then group premiums. This rule is not true for everyone however. Carriers set rates according to factors such as age, location and medical conditions. So if you or your dependent is 55 and has a few medical conditions you may get the best rates through the group policy.

If you are eligible for Group insurance and you have a medical condition then most of the time Group is the favorable option. See where individual insurance can base rates and coverage on you as an individual group can not. They must cover you even if you have a significant health condition.

If it is freedom you like, than an individual plan is probably a good choice. They have many plans, many benefits and many customizable additions. You just pick and choose, find what suits your needs and get what you pay for. No more, no less.

When you go with a group you are locked in. You are obligated to use the plan they offer with no freedom to choose the benefit package. They also have an enrollment period. If you miss it you have to wait a year to sign back up or make changes. Your employer can change the carrier and/or plan every year if they want, which means rates and benefits are subject to change. And it may leave you searching for a new physician every year.

Employer group policies usually just cover medical. Vision and dental may be offered from your employer, but usually as a separate cost, separate plan and different carrier. With individual health insurance many of the carriers offer bundling. Which means you can have medical, dental and vision in one plan and one rate.

As you can see there are many factors you should ponder before deciding which option is best for you and your family. You should take some time to think about your budget, medical conditions and what is important to you.

Many major health insurance companies are offering health insurance plans to individuals. It use to be that we depended on our employer to meet that need. With the high cost of group premiums that is not longer the case.

by Jeff Cline

Many major health insurance companies are offering health insurance plans to individuals. It use to be that we depended on our employer to meet that need. With the high cost of group premiums that is not longer the case.

Carriers have stepped up to the plate with some affordable and flexible options for the individual health insurance shopper. They have paid attention to the demand and what consumers are looking for. They have many budget friendly plans as well.

An advantage to having an individual health insurance plan is that you can take it with you from job to job. And since people do not stay with the same companies for decades any longer this is convenient. And you can custom fit the plan to your needs. No more one size fits all plans that the employers offer.

The majority of consumers like the PPO plans. These plans give freedom to choose your physician. You decide when you see a specialist, not your primary doctor. If you go to physicians in the network you save money with negotiated rates.

You should start by narrowing down your choices. There are many. Hop on the internet and start surfing. you can find rates and compare plan offerings. The internet is a very beneficial tool when shopping for individual health insurance.

Make a list of priorities. Say you do not want to change the doctor you have grown up seeing. Then check with each carriers provider list and narrow down the carriers the doctor is contracted with. Is money the main object. Well then all you do is decide on a rate you can afford and eliminate all the plans above that price.

If you are use to paying a set amount when you go to the doctor you can find those plans that have a co pay benefit. If you want added benefits such as dental, maternity or life insurance you can explore the different carriers to see what plans and riders they may offer. If you want the works check out all the premium plans.

If you are a busy busy bee and have no time for research then give a broker a call. Typically they get paid by the insuranc companies not you so what do you have to lose. They have helped people of all situations find suitable insurance so the research is done.

by Ethan Kalvin

One of the big political tennis balls being bounced around Washington these days is the issue of health care coverage for Americans. After a while, listening to the debate gets tiresome and maybe a little irritating, but there seems to be an important factor being left out. Unmarried adults. We always hear about the need for families to have health insurance, especially when young children are involved, but we almost never hear of the twenty and thirty-something singles.

What if we started saying as part of the debate, “Young, working, single adults need to get individual health insurance today.” What would be the reaction? I’m not sure, but I do know that there are millions of people in this category who are new to the work force and are working jobs with less than stellar benefits. For most entry-level positions, individual health insurance is not part of the package. In cases where it is, the coverage may be minimal as a way of keep employer costs down. It’s not uncommon for the kid fresh out of college to take his first job and not have health insurance.

Quite often, young people in their twenties and thirties aren’t very concerned that they don’t have health coverage. After all, they are in the prime of their lives with minimal responsibilities and filled with optimism for the future. Their health is not a concern and they’re used to rebounding quickly after a routine cold or flu. Chronic disease or debilitating injuries don’t seem to be on their radar, as they consider those things usually to be reserved for older people.

So what options are available to young singles? There are three. The first is to not worry about your health and hope nothing goes wrong. In the event of a serious health issue, you can just let it go, ride it out, and hope it doesn’t kill you. Not a very attractive option. Second, you can keep an eye on your health and pay out-of-pocket for preventative medicine. If something serious occurs, you can apply for government assistance. This is better than the first option, but still not the greatest.

The last option is the one that makes the most sense and it is simple. Get health insurance. Yes, you will be paying premiums much higher than you want or think you can afford. But all of the latest electronic gadgets or expensive clothes in the world won’t do you a bit of good if you can’t use them because of poor health. So be the most important person in your own life. Get yourself covered under a health insurance plan.

The pros and cons of Group versus Individual health insurance are easy if you know a few basic things. Below you will find those answers, equipping you with the knowledge to decide which the best option for you is. There are a few things to consider when compiling your list of pros and cons.

On a group policy it is often difficult to afford coverage for dependents, because the employer does not pay a portion. Even your rates can be expensive if you employer does not share much of the cost for you or the plan they offer is very expensive. With the rising cost of health insurance these are trends we are seeing.

Individual rates can be more affordable, but that rate is based on many factors that may make Group coverage the best option. If you have a medical condition or you are overweight your premium will reflect that in an individual insurance plan. Costing you more.

If you are eligible for Group insurance and you have a medical condition then most of the time Group is the favorable option. See where individual insurance can base rates and coverage on you as an individual group can not. They must cover you even if you have a significant health condition.

One of the pro’s to going with individual health coverage is the freedom to choose a plan that suits your needs best. Carriers offer a huge array of different plans for you to choose. They have catastrophic plans, plans that allow office visits for a small fee (co pay) and even tax compatible plans called HSA’s.

How would you like to be told what benefits you will have, which providers you can see and how much your going to pay. With group insurance this is what you get. You do not get the freedom to decide these factors. You can not even add a dependent unless it is the right time of the year.

Employer group policies usually just cover medical. Vision and dental may be offered from your employer, but usually as a separate cost, separate plan and different carrier. With individual health insurance many of the carriers offer bundling. Which means you can have medical, dental and vision in one plan and one rate.

You have much thinking to do now. You have to decide what is important. You now have to tools to make a good decision. Don’t sell yourself short or be locked out of a good thing. Your needs should be tops when making this decision.

Having medical insurance is no guarantee you won’t be overbilled. Many are finding inaccuracies in the bills they receive from hospitals and caregivers. The problem is less uncommon than one would think. It could be sloppiness or it could mean the right hand isn’t talking to the left hand. Hospital billing procedures often do leave a lot to be desired, since there are so many involved in the patient’s care. But errors do occur, and it is a good idea to do a line by line review of your hospital bill.

One young nurse recently had an eye opening experience as she was reviewing the bills from her husband’s recent hospital stay. It appears he had been scheduled to be released on a particular day, and that wasn’t communicated somehow, causing him to have to stay an extra day. There were excessive charges for administering medication 7 times per day when it was only prescribed 4 times per day. And then there was the charge for $875 for one item that she knew from her hospital work should have only been around $80. Clerical error. By the time she was finished, she had discovered nearly $7000 of incorrect charges.

So when you receive a hospital bill, it is a good idea to sit down and review it very carefully. If you have questions, sit down with your doctor instead of the hospital billing department. The billing department is clerical by nature, and they don’t always have an accurate history of the care that was actually provided. Make sure you ask questions.

If you are unable to find satisfactory answers to your questions, you do have other resources. There are patient advocate groups available to help. And don’t hesitate to contact the insurance commissioner in your state if you are having issues with your insurance company.

Medical insurance is there to protect us in case we need it. And hospital stays are unpleasant enough without having to deal with a bill laden with codes and numbers. The hospital can decypher this for you and they will. We know medical bills can be filled with errors and you should not have to pay for things you did not receive. So do your homework, put a little effort into it, and you’ll find that the resolution of the errors will work out as it should.

The issues of health care and health insurance garnered plenty of attention and legislative activity in 2008. The volume of the activity clearly shows that lawmakers know that health care and insurance are issues that are of utmost import to Americans. Fewer and fewer can afford coverage as insurance premiums and prescriptons go through the roof and deductibles still continue to rise. In Washington DC recently, a health care forum was sponsored by two non-partisan organizations which brought to the fore that the general consensus amongst Senate staffers is that there is an expectation that major health care reform can be achieved in 2009.

Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), himself being treated for a brain tumorr, recently gave up his seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee in order to focus on health care, stating that it was “the opportunity of a lifetime” to finally get a plan enacted. Speaking at the forum, John McDonough, a health care aide to Kennedy stated that the Senator is committed to achieving reform and is very confident of its ability to pass.

The Republican Health Policy Director for the Senate Finance Committee, Charles Clapton stated that there was strong Republican support for getting the plan done, but that money is constricted by over a trillion dollar deficit. There would be competition for the funding, but with a system wherein private plans were delivering the benefits, we would see the most innovation. Similarly, Dr. Mark L. Hayes, the GOP Advisor for Health Policy on the Senate Finance Committe stressed the necessity for bipartisanship if a bill is to get passed, and that waiting 15 years to enact a plan will cause severe problems as opposed to solving the problem now.

Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)’s aide Jocelyn Moore also spoke up at the forum. She stressed that the issues of skyrocketing unnecessary spending, effective preventative care, and affordability should be addressed in the development of a sweeping reform plan. She stated that all options are on the table and that Senator Rockefeller is eager to get started working with the Congressional leadership and the new Administration to accomplish the goal of comprehensive health care reform.

The ranks of the unemployed are growing monthly, with nearly 1.2 million jobs eliminated in November and December alone. And the newly unemployed are not likely to be able to afford to maintain their health care coverage for long. The issue seems to be growing as a matter of urgency, and hopefully Congress will realize that health care is not a partisan issue, as they work together in 2009 to pass a comprehensive universal health care plan.

Last year, 2008, brought an unusually large amount of attention to the issues of health care and health insurance. This high level of activity speaks directly to the interest level that the public holds regarding health in this country these days. And when the public shows interest in a topic, legislators are generally swayed soon thereafter.

There were some health related milestones in the food world in 2008. McDonald’s announced they would stop using trans fat laden oils to cook their french fries and baked goods in all their U.S. and Canada restaurants. And California became the first state in the nation to ban trans fats in restaurants. In more good news for arteries, dark chocolate was determined to be of value in lowering blood pressure and increasing blood circulation.

On the state level there was much activity. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, after pushing aggressively for a comprehensive health care reform, vetoed legislation that would have provided a single payer system. It was his second veto in three years of a similar plan. Across the country in Florida, Governor Charlie Crist was able to pass a law that will provide residents with affordable coverage through a new Florida health insurance program. Meanwhile, Hawaii Governor Linda Lingle axed the state’s universal health insurance program for children, due to budget constraints. And in Massachusetts, due to skyrocketing costs, lawmakers were forced to raise premiums for the state-subsidized health insurance program.

During the 2008 Presidential campaign, Barack Obama committed to making health care reform one of his top priorities. As the President-elect, he moved swiftly in that direction, naming former U.S. Senator Tom Daschle as his choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services. Daschle has long considered health care to be of greatest importance. U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy relinquished his seat on the Senate Judiciary committee in order to work on a comprehensive health care plan, stating that, “This is the opportunity of a lifetime.”

Nationally, lawmakers passed a law that disallows health insurance companies to discriminate based on genetic information. And the health insurance industry also agreed to terms that would disallow coverage in the presence of pre-existing conditions, with the existence of a universal health insurance mandate in place. So there was much activity in 2008 and the issue will continue to grow in importance as the new Congress convenes.
